Mastering the Internal Environment: The Science of Breathwork (Pranayama)
What is breathwork?
Breathwork, or Pranayama, is far more than a simple relaxation tool. In the context of the Wellbeing Workshop, the breath is treated as a manual override for the human nervous system. While we often think of breathing as an automatic process, it is one of the most accessible bridge between our conscious mind and our autonomic functions, such as heart rate, immune response, and stress levels.
The Bridge to the Autonomic Nervous System
Standard science once taught that the autonomic nervous system—the part of us that controls "fight or flight" and "rest and digest" responses—was beyond our conscious control. However, research into it clearly shows that specific breathing patterns can directly and deliberately modulate the nervous system and the fractal body to not only heal but also enhance wellbeing. Conversely, techniques like Box Breathing or Belly Breathing (found in the Portal syllabus) stimulate the vagus nerve, signaling the brain to move out of survival mode and into a state of recovery and repair.
